Zionsville standout Maguire Mitchell will be staying close by to continue his college career.
Mitchell signed with IU-Indianapolis earlier this week to continue his academic and athletic careers, and celebrated the decision on Friday afternoon at ZCHS.
“It feels really good (to finalize everything),” Mitchell said on Friday. “I love the coaches there, I love what they believe in and just having the recruiting process being over feels really good and is a big weight off my back. I am really happy to have it over with.”
IU-Indianapolis (formerly IUPUI) are coached by Paul Corsaro.
Mitchell said several things about the program stood out to him when he was going through the recruiting process.
“It was really the coaches at first, and how hard they recruited me,” Mitchell said. “Coach Corsaro didn’t hesitate, we talked once and then they offered the next day. Them believing in me that much, that was what really did it.”
It also helped that the Indianapolis campus is close to home.Â
Mitchell had a large contingent of family and friends show up to his celebration on Friday, and having that support system nearby is going to be helpful.
“That was a huge thing,” Mitchell said. “I have a big family, and them being able to come to my games was really important to me. I am really glad that they can do that still.”
Mitchell averaged a team-best 20.9 points a game last season (38th best in the state), and grabbed 5.1 rebounds.
He scored a career high 32 points against Brebeuf Jesuit. He finished his junior year with 701 career points.
“Their coaches liked how versatile I am,” Mitchell said. “They love to run up and down, and I can add to that. He likes how I crash the boards and how I can get out and just go and handle the ball up and down the court. Really, he thinks I fit perfectly in their offense.”
While excited about the future, Mitchell still has big goals for his senior year at Zionsville.
He wants to win the sectional championship, and if the Eagles can do that, all of the personal goals he has for the season will follow.
And it will also be the perfect cap to a standout Zionsville career.
Mitchell said that he will leave high school at the end of the year with a lot of great memories from his time as an EAgel.
